Foundation skill assessment, or FSA is nothing but a set of written examination intended to take a snapshot measure the level of student knowledge. It deals with three of the subject areas that are the basics to overall learning. The basic learning includes reading along with writing and numeracy.

The FSA is given each and every year to all the students in grades of 4, 7 and 10. The assessment for reading and numeracy involves both multiple choices and open ended questions. The writing component generally consists of the first draft of both a short and longer writing task. Frankly speaking the assessment takes approximately four hours of class time.
